Two Centuries of Soft-Hackled Flies: A Survey of the Literature Complete with Original Patterns, Present by Sylvester Nemes avg rating — 8 ratings — published I have a question about Soft Hackles, Are there any good books on how to fish the soft hackle.
I have been reading 's book " Two Centuries of Soft-Hackled Flies" it talks about the flies, history and patterns, and talks about fishing them like dry fly's but doesnt explain how to fish them. Soft-hackled flies have long, supple hackle fibers, the sort that wave like delicate legs when the pressure of water against them is light and varied.
So for soft-hackled flies, you need hackle with especially soft fibers — hen saddle (hen neck is okay, but a bit stiff—better for wet flies), partridge flank, starling, and such. "March Brown" is a name you see attached to a lot of different wet fly patterns.
Some of them are caddis; others, mayflies. This spider is intended to represent the latter. I discovered it on page of Sylvester Nemes' Two Centuries of Soft-Hackled Flies. It was originally published in in an English book, Trout. In his Two Centuries of Soft-Hackled Flies (), Sylvester Nemes relates patterns from Roger Woolley’s Modern Trout Fly Dressing () that “are not too common and might be worth a swing or two on your favorite water.” The first is Woolley’s Winter Brown.
In Two Centuries of Soft-Hackled Flies (), Sylvester Nemes gives particular attention to the Pismire fly in his treatment of T. Salter’s The Angler’s Guide (). He suggests that the fly might be intended as a dressing for an ant. The word "pismire" is, as Nemes notes, an old word for the insect.
The book detailed the techniques and methodology of fishing soft-hackled wet flies, which had for centuries proven an effective way to take trout, but had generally fallen out of favor in the U.S.

And what a great way to start a book that is so small yet appears to be so powerful, “With so noble a beginning, it is the purpose of this book to restore the soft-hackled fly to its rightful place.” Clearly that is a lofty goal for a book that is only pages long in its second edition.

It’s a pattern book for sure, but there’s also plenty of relevant storytelling. It’s loaded with peals of wisdom (“If you have never tied flies before, I urge you to start immediately. On to that deadly and easy-to-tie pattern you requested, John.
The aforementioned Mr. Hughes is a big fan of the March Brown Spider soft-hackled fly and in his aforementioned book says, “It is not an imitation of any particular insect, but it has a rough resemblance to lots of them.” He adds: “I fish the March Brown Spider a lot.” So do I.
